The Crop Hop – a Cycling Tour of Southern Maryland Farms

Updated: October 14, 2012

It was the first year for this event and the organizers did an outstanding job! The Crop Hop offered options for cyclists of every level of experience and ability. It included not only a 63 mile metric century, but also routes that were 29, 13, and 5 miles in length – each featuring farm stops where there was food, drink and a farm tour.

The ride was put on by the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC) and was sponsored by St. Mary’s County Tourism, the Patuxent Adventure Center, and the St. Mary’s County Fair.

Over 175 cyclists participated in this fundraiser helping to provide fresh farm foods to low-income families in Southern Maryland. All proceeds, after expenses, are being used to purchase fresh farm food for low-income families through the Southern Maryland Food Bank.

The weather could not have cooperated any more with clear skies, sunshine, and high temperatures in the low 70’s by mid-afternoon. The routes were well marked and the ride was fully supported by SAG wagons. The day ended with a post-tour picnic made of local ingredients at the Home Grown Farm Market in Lexington Park, MD.

We’re already looking forward to next year! Keep your eyes open for it on the web at and on Facebook at
