We got an early start considering our destination of Hancock, MD and the Western Maryland Rail Trail is approximately a 2.5 hour drive.  I will say this rails-to-trails project was well worth the journey.  The asphalt paved trail starts roughly a 1/2 mile from Fort Frederick State Park (Big Pool Station) and extends 23 miles.  The trail is almost completely flat.

The first section of trail opened in 1998 and the western end opened in 2002.  A last 2.5 mile section opened in 2004 extending the westward terminus making the entire trail 23 miles in length.

During this time of year (late September) the trail is beginning to cover with fallen leaves, black walnuts, acorns, and other foliage.  Caution is advised particularly when the trail is damp.

Our journey began in Hancock, MD and traveled westward to the trail end in Pearre, MD through rock outcroppings and passing several historic landmarks.
